The M.C. Sparks, SR Memorial Essay contest is an annual event that is open to all 7th & 8th graders in DeSoto County. This contest theme and guidelines follow the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD). This contest is designed to challenge the minds of our youth on conservation topics. The contest information is sent to schools after returning from Christmas Break. Essays have a specific due date.
Essay winners are selected from entrees from all participating schools and awarded cash prizes. One first place winner is sent on to area competition. Area winners are sent to the state competition. State winners compete at the National competition. Teacher sponsors of winning student essays will receive cash prizes. All participating schools will also receive a cash prize for their school library in order to purchase conservation books.
The M.C. Sparks, JR Memorial Poster Contest is another annual event. It is open to ALL student's, including special education students, grades K-12. Students follow the same topic that the essay contest does as set by the NACD. The contest information is sent to schools after returning from Christmas Break. Poster entrees also have a specific due date. Poster winners are selected from different grade categories and awarded cash prizes along with their sponsoring teachers.
An Awards Reception is held at the Board of Education in the Spring, before school dismisses for summer break.
