This program began over 40 years ago for DeSoto County 3rd graders. In years past, volunteers wrapped a seedling for every third grader in the county. Then each school is visited to present an educational program on trees and seedlings were distributed.
In 2016, the tree program, changed just a little. Students are still visited by volunteers to deliver an educational program; however, instead of receiving a seedling each student now receives an item made from trees to take home. Volunteers discuss/teach students: the history of the Southern Magnolia, what resources we get from trees, the different parts of a tree, tree facts, and how to plant their tree. This event is scheduled in February of each year. If you are interested in volunteering to help with this program please contact Meleiah Tyus via email at [email protected] or call 662-912-4152 for more information. 2021 Annual Third Grade Tree Program. *Due to Pandemic, this year's program was made via video for all third grade schools. |
